ICNYU Shia Chaplaincy & Muharram Majlis Campaign

The Islamic Center at New York University has established the first Shia chaplaincy at any University in the United States and this Muharram we are looking for your support as we continue to make strides in building out our distinctive institution. Being Muslim these days is quite difficult and for young Muslims, it's that much harder.  Within the broader experience of marginalization that so many Muslims experience, Shia Muslims quite often find an absence of spaces for themselves on college campuses. At ICNYU things are different.  Amongst many services in programs:

• We have for more than 5 years hosted Muharram Majalis programs nightly in commemoration of the tragedy of Imam Hussain (a) 

• For the last 2 years we have had on staff a full-time associate chaplain who is a trained scholar of Ja'afri fiqh and well-versed in Shia experience in the United States and beyond to provide spiritual guidance, religious instruction and pastoral care to all of our stakeholders.

• Other programs such as weekly halaqas, special services during the last nights of Ramadan, guided umrah trips and, most recently, leadership during the Hajj pilgrimage, and so much more.  

Our hope is to build a sustainable donor base oriented towards Shia programming and services at ICNYU. As we are in the midst of blessed days which call upon our community to greater values and spiritual enlightenment, we are seeking your support primarily to meet the expenses of our Muharram Majlis program which costs us about $3000 a night.  Funds raised beyond that will go towards the yearly operating budget for the Shia Chaplaincy at NYU. 

In the long term, we hope to raise ~ $3 million in order to establish the "Imam Hussain Chair for Shia Chaplaincy" at ICNYU, an endowment that can facilitate Shia programming and services to run at New York University in perpetuity.
