Our Crowdfunding Groups
The Office of Global Services’ Alternative Breaks Committee aims to create active citizenship opportunities for NYU students across all majors and degree levels. Rooted in experiential learning and social justice framework pedagogy, OGS’s Alternative Break to Cape Town, South Africa, will immerse students in critical dialogue, service, and reflection.
Aside from daily service projects, participants learn about South Africa's history and culture through group outings and substantial engagement with activists, entrepreneurs, and fellow community members throughout the trip. The program’s goals are to create a holistic understanding and approach to service on both local and global levels.
Students will embark on a two week trip to the Western Cape and will engage in meaningful work in the Nomzamo and Lwandle townships. Students will instruct a certificate based computer skills program, one that is officially recognized by the South African government and facilitated by our partner organization, Global Vision International (GVI). The overall goal of this program is to promote economic opportunity and women’s empowerment through individualized, technology-based skills training.
Upon their return to NYU, students will take what they’ve learned from their global experience and put their J-term service into practice in their local community. Participants are expected to undertake ongoing sustainable community development and women’s empowerment efforts by partnering with local organizations in New York, rounding out the one year Alternative Breaks program. Students will showcase their work and learning outcomes at the end of the year’s CelABration event. We need your support in funding 14 of our participant’s program expenses for the J-term program (January 3rd-January 18th).
Each participant’s cost breakdown is as follows:
Round Trip Ticket: $1480
GVI Program costs: $2100 (includes room and board, transportation, and ongoing funding for community projects)
Total: $3580 (before OGS scholarship)
Additionally, OGS has invested $1000 in each student’s expenditures leaving the total cost for each student to $2580.
