Prison Education Program (PEP)

The promotion of higher education opportunities for those who are currently and formerly incarcerated is a contribution to the creation of a more humane and just society, and is a reflection of NYU’s commitment to public service.

The NYU Prison Education Program (PEP) is committed to models of collaborative learning that emphasize principles of social engagement and critical reflection. We view education within prisons as part of a broader effort to change how we think about incarceration and its collateral effects throughout our city, state, and nation. Developed by faculty, staff, students, and alumni at NYU,PEP offers credit-bearing courses leading to an NYU Associate of Arts (AA) degree in Liberal Studies to students currently incarcerated at Wallkill Correctional Facility, located in Ulster County, New York.

By offering transferrable credits and education support services, PEP creates opportunities for students while they are incarcerated and upon their release. Contributions to the NYU Prison Education Program will provide students with books, enable tutoring and academic advising at Wallkill, and will fund course instructional and transportation costs. For an in-depth view of the value of the NYU Prison Education Program, please visit prisoneducation.nyu.edu.

"Should you make a donation, you will receive a receipt from NYU that confirms this.  Note the receipt may indicate your gift is directed to the 'Dean's Discretionary Fund' or the general 'Gallatin: All In Crowdfunding Campaign,' but rest assured, your contribution will be used to support the specific program you've selected."
