In our 50 years of history on the FM dial, WNYU has been the home of some of the earliest interviews, performances, and airplay of bands like Nirvana, R.E.M, The Cure, and Public Enemy, and has broadcast 24/7 for the majority of that time, all while operating entirely under the supervision of students. While college radio as a medium has been constantly threatened by budget shortfalls and corporate interests, WNYU has remained, independent and alternative, winning awards and recognition from the music industry and independent artists alike. This year, though, in the wake of already strained COVID conditions, our broadcasting tower that keeps us on air required emergency repairs, pulling a massive chunk of our expected club budget and blocking us from the post-COVID plans we had. Our missions have been consistent--upgrading our equipment and station offices to ensure high-quality broadcasting; to return to promoting concerts and events like those we were famous for before the pandemic; to celebrate our 50th anniversary properly; and to properly compensate our student management team who work around the clock to run the station from both a creative and operational perspective. Your donation will help us so greatly, and its applications will be instantly noticeable, as we work to provide increasingly quality content and remain in business as an institution of local music and media.
