Support Journalism About Latin America ¡Por el periodismo!

Hi, we are Latin America News Dispatch, otherwise known as LAND. We are a news publication run by NYU graduate students in the Global Journalism (GloJo) and Latin American and Caribbean studies programs. LAND was founded in 2009 by four journalism students in the GloJo program. We form part of a unique program that collaborates with NYU's Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies.

At LAND, our mission is to report on Latin America and the Caribbean, and its people, including those in the diaspora. We seek to inform our readers through stories that are relevant and might otherwise go unnoticed. Ultimately, we envision a society that is well-informed about the region and its people, and which shows an active interest in the news media landscape focused on the region.

Most importantly, we actively compete with the most prestigious news outlets to inform you about what's happening in the region and its people. Now, we are counting on you to help us continue this dignified work.

We want to take a moment to thank you for your continued readership. It's a fact of modern life that we exist in an attention and information economy where time is a limited and precious resource. As such, our standard is to offer you the highest quality information. We are indebted to the attention you offer us. With this in mind, I thank you for depositing your faith in LAND.

Currently, we have a team of four staff. Ahead are their bios:

Alfredo Eladio Moreno is the Editor-in-Chief of LAND. He is a journalist and photographer from his native Houston, Texas. Alfredo began his career as a journalist in 2020, with a story about the clandestine burials that were occurring in Nicaragua during the Covid-19 pandemic. Since then he has written stories on Mexican politics and immigration policy in the United States, and especially on Nicaragua and the Ortega-Murillo regime. Most recently, he has taken an interest in lithium and the geopolitical consequences of the emerging global lithium market.

“What I enjoy most about working at LAND is the idea of steering a project started by students into something larger than its founders could have imagined. I also value that a student-run publication can be so competitive in our current media landscape. Our democracy thrives on competition, and at the same time I am inspired by the connections that LAND has made under my tenure. Will you please donate so that we can continue this amazing work?”

Kiana Katrisha Paclibon is Managing Editor at LAND. Born in Manila, Philippines and raised in California, she is a storyteller with an appetite for histories of cross-cultural connection. She was based in Córdoba, Argentina for 4 years where she worked as a translator/interpreter and copywriter before moving to New York. With a background in psychology and international relations, Kiana is passionate about telling people-focused stories that center South America’s racial and ethnic minorities and queer communities.

“LAND is about seeking out stories of the politics and world events that shape the lives of people in and from Latin America and the Caribbean. It’s a thrill to work alongside our partners who not only share our team’s passion for the region but also believe in the impact of excellent journalism. It is thanks to our donors that we continue to deliver our readers stories that matter.”

Marin Scotten is a staff writer at LAND. She was born and raised in Ottawa, Canada and studied journalism in Toronto before moving to New York City. She is very interested in the global food system and how it intersects with gender, class, race and environmental issues. Through various forms of storytelling, Marin hopes to document the human side of complex issues and challenge the stereotypes historically portrayed in traditional media.

“I’ve always been interested in Latin America and the long lasting impact colonialism had had on many different countries throughout the region. Getting to work at a publication that covers the many social, political and environmental complexities of Latin America through rigorous reporting and storytelling. None of this would be possible without our donors.”

Carmela Guaglianone is a staff writer at LAND. She was born and raised in Arizona, attended college in North Carolina and lived briefly in San Francisco. She is entranced by legacies and unfolding instances of migration, which constitute much of her academic (and personal) background. Her stories consider the complex causes and consequences of cross border movement on the people and places involved. She also works as a reporter for the San Francisco Examiner.

What makes LAND competitive is our willingness to work with the freelance journalists who are reporting on the ground from Latin America. They help us see the region and its people from the places where the news is taking place. They depend on our modest yet generous payments to continue reporting for us. Donate today to make sure you keep receiving high quality stories from us.

As always, be well and thank you for your support!
