Francophone Community Exchange

The Francophone Community Exchange has proved to be an excellent opportunity for NYU students to give to the community and for primary school students to feel connected to the education system.

The program partners NYU undergraduates studying French with primary school students at the dual-language New York French American Charter School (NYFACS) in Harlem. The FCE seeks to provide mentoring and tutoring to elementary school students, to engage in language exchanges in a low-pressure environment, and to foster relationships between NYU students and the larger New York City community.

Since we launched in spring 2016 with 10 tutors, our program has grown each semester: we will have 25 tutors this semester, and we are hoping to expand to a second tutoring site in Brooklyn in the spring. We are also planning to invite the rising middle school students at NYFACS to visit NYU’s campus for an afternoon. Last fall, we were one of 10 student organizations in the United States recognized by the French Embassy’s “France on Campus Award”, and in Spring 2016, we were awarded the NYU President’s Service Award.

NYU’s Department of French has generously funded our work over the past two years. However, as we grow, we need additional funding to support new initiatives. Our annual budget is currently $2000, and our goal is to raise an additional $2000 to pay for public transportation from NYU to NYFACS, recruitment and expansion to a second tutoring site, and a NYU campus visit for NYFACS students.
