About Us:
The NYU Alternative Breaks team going to Belize in March 2018 is made up of 10 student participants, 2 student Site Leaders, and 2 Professional Staff members. This team of fourteen is a diverse and varied representation of many different NYU schools, majors, residence halls, and years. Our team is going to Belize to do environmental work, and we are partnered with the global organization Peacework. Our partner at Peacework, Hannah Huntley, has been based out of Belize for the last nine years and brings us her strength of relationships with the community, plus a wealth of knowledge about the area.
The NYU-Peacework partnership is brand new this year, and our team needs YOUR help to make this trip possible! With our trip costing $1,800 per participant (including airfare, housing, and transportation in Belize), we are working to fundraise over $20,000 to make this trip possible. All of the students and staff involved are taking the entirety of their year and their spring break to make this happen, and with your generous donations we hope to fund 100% of each student's trip to make this a positive and financially affordable experience.
Alternative Breaks NYU:
The Alternative Breaks program provides students with the opportunity to learn about political and social community dynamics while becoming a catalyst for collaborative social change. Through learning and practice, students will explore the theory of integrating service, education, and reflection to create meaningful change in their communities.
Our vision is to create a community of lifelong active citizens who prioritize the pursuit of social justice: people who value the community as a priority when making life decisions. As part of the Alternative Break experience, participants will become more educated and experienced in all sides of a social issue. Upon return, they will be empowered to make more informed decisions and take meaningful action that supports a greater good. They will become contributing members of society and will weigh in on issues that impact their community.
