Comm*Unity: First-Year Service Learning Experience

Comm*Unity is an Alternative Breaks trip focused on getting first-year commuter students involved with leadership and service at NYU. During Spring Break, we travel down to Stone Mountain, Georgia to work with the issue of refugee resettlement. Leading up to the trip, we engage in monthly service and learning outings to better prepare ourselves for the service we will be doing in GA. In addition, we also attempt to learn about social issues plaguing the world.

Once in Georgia, we will be working with the Lutheran Services of Georgia (LSG).

LSG’s Refugee Services assists thousands of refugees each year on the path to citizenship. RIS aims to help refugees achieve economic self-sufficiency, integrate successfully into their new communities and country, and strive for citizenship.

LSG provides services to newly arrived refugees to help them become economically self-sufficient, socially integrated, and culturally acclimated. One of the most important steps for our refugee clients is obtaining their first job in the United States. With that, LSG works to assist refugees with: resettlement, cultural adjustment, cultural orientation, employment, and afterschool services for kids.
