12 million senior citizens currently live alone. Living in isolation can be detrimental to mental health and well-being. To learn more about the support that elderly Americans experience, our Alternative Breaks team will travel to Atlanta, Georgia to serve with A.G. Rhodes Health and Rehabilitation, a network of nursing homes and geriatric care providers. Serving alongside these professionals, we will actively engage with the challenges facing geriatric care.

Alternative Breaks is an organization that allows students to dedicate an academic year towards preparing for and digesting a service-learning experience focused on a social justice issue to better understand the practical applications of knowledge gained from our service, research, and discussion of topics surrounding geriatric care. This year, we want to gain the knowledge to better understand this system and build relationships with like-minded students.

Although Alternative Breaks at NYU provides a platform for our group to experience the challenges and benefits of geriatric care, it is up to us as a group to create the experience for ourselves. The biggest hurdle in creating this experience is the costs of traveling and lodging. For this reason, we are asking for your support to help supplement the costs of this wonderful opportunity. We have specifically set a fundraising goal of $1,800 in order to cover half of the cost of our round-trip flights to Atlanta from New York.
