With seven hours left of the campaign, we just wanted to say THANK YOU to all our donors! Your support enabled us to exceed our original goal by 29%! The $2,580 raised will cover conference expenses for two NYU Meyers students next semester.

Thank you again for your support in memory of our beloved colleague and friend, Jorge Prada.

As we pass what would have been Jorge Prada's 50th birthday, I think back to the first day I met him. He was still a student at Hunter College, pursuing a second career in nursing. I was at a local chapter meeting of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses (NAHN) with my NYU Meyers students. Jorge came over to introduce himself and I was immediately impressed with his openness and his enthusiasm and determination to be a successful student and nurse.

By 2014, Jorge had completed his master’s degree and we were working together at NYU. He was so generous and dedicated to his students and colleagues. We became a team and worked together to find funding for students to attend local and national conferences, which would open the door for them to network, volunteer, and develop their leadership potential. This scholarship that we are raising money for truly embodies the legacy of Jorge's life and career.

Even his illness couldn't stop him from doing what he loved. You could always find us in a corner, plotting a next step or a new person to ask for support. My partner in this mission we shared is gone much too soon and I knew that his spirit needed to be honored. This scholarship is just one way for us to keep Jorge’s determination to support the advancement of nursing students going.

We are so close to our goal of $2,000 to start this scholarship fund. Thank you so much to the donors that have already contributed. To all future supporters of this scholarship, thank you in advance for helping us honor our dear friend Jorge.

This week, we want to feature a Jorge story from Hannah Ewing, a recent graduate of NYU Meyers:

“Before I started my maternity clinical rotation with Jorge last summer, my intended career path was oncology nursing. However, after just one day in clinical, Jorge was able to see that maternity nursing was a better fit, even before I recognized it myself. He became my advocate and encouraged me to explore the field of maternity nursing because he saw something spark inside me.

Jorge helped me network during my clinical rotation. Because of him, I am happy to say that I will be starting a job as a mother-baby nurse at NYU Langone! It means so much to me to be able to work at the same place that Jorge did. I miss him and know that he would have been proud of me.

Jorge was a fantastic educator and had such a big heart. He opened doors for me and changed my life and I know that this scholarship will do the same for other students!”
