Chicago Trip: Domestic Peace with CADP

Hello! We’re the 2019/2020 NYU Alternative Breaks Domestic Peace Team. This spring break we will be traveling to Chicago and partnering with the Center for Advancing Domestic Peace (CADP) to concentrate on the social issue of domestic violence. In Chicago, we will be providing support to CADP, as well as other local organizations, through community-based domestic peace aid and rehabilitation for individuals in the Chicago metropolitan area. 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men will experience severe physical violence by an intimate partner, and nearly half of all men and women in the United States will experience psychological aggression by an intimate partner in their lifetime. We believe ending the cycle of abuse necessitates not only providing resources and support for victims, but also working with perpetrators directly to provide the rehabilitation, education, and second chances they need. CADP works directly with people who have abused to stop their domestic violence, take responsibility for their behavior, understand the circumstances that led them here, and create healthy relationships that strengthen their communities. The students who partake in the trip to Chicago to work with CADP, as well as other local organizations working on this issues, such as the Chicago Metropolitan Battered Women’s Network, will be learning valuable skills and gaining a more holistic understanding of how to increase domestic peace nationally and in their own communities. While in Chicago, and during the time leading up to our trip, we will be working to develop a greater understanding of the widespread problem of domestic violence and gain greater insight into diverse stories and perspectives, as well as intersecting social issues. Through this experience, we will become more equipped to continue promoting domestic peace, as well as other social issues. We hope to apply these valuable skills and service methods to contribute further to the NYC community, and become more active citizens in the realm of domestic peace as well as other social issues. By donating to the Chicago trip for Domestic Peace, you are directly contributing to these students’ abilities to promote a world that is filled with peace. Any donation would be incredibly appreciated. We thank you in advance for your generosity!
