Meet The Composers! (pt. 3)

November 21, 2020

Meet the composers of the Remote Collaboration Series round 3!

Adam Lutz – Adam is a composer whose music is characterized by a subtle handling of timbre and harmony and a deep literary fluency. He is passionate about exploring the varying relationships between existence, consciousness, and experience, often referencing works of the philosophical and literary canon. Check out Adam's Patreon for more: https://bit.ly/3flesyK

Nicole Russell – Nicole is an African-American and Mexican-American composer, pianist, and vocalist born and raised in Austin, Texas. Her work includes art songs, choral music, chamber music, band music, and electro-acoustic music. Nicole is an active pianist and mezzo-soprano, performing as a soloist or accompanist in styles from classical to jazz. Take a look at Nicole's website to listen to her work: www.nicolerussellmusic.com

Dan Langa – Dan's work is deeply influenced by his background as a jazz trumpeter and training as a pianist. He holds a particular fascination with electroacoustic music and how to incorporate elements of the natural world into his work. Growing up in Ann Arbor, MI placed him between the vibrant electronic, soul, and hip-hop scenes of Detroit, the strong folk music community in Ann Arbor, and the classical music concerts presented through the University of Michigan. This eclectic mixture has come to inform how Dan listens to and writes music. You can listen to Dan's music at his website: www.danlanga.com

Ideas & Sketches - First Meetings With Our Collaborators

November 17, 2020

Last week we had the chance to work with our three collaborators to talk through some early ideas and sketches. We'll be sharing more of the collaboration process as we continue to write and work closely with Dashon, Matt, and Arlen! Thanks for your support of this project and be sure to follow us on social media for more behind the scenes!

Performer Announcement - Matt Evans!

November 02, 2020

For our final performer announcement, we are psyched to have percussionist, Matt Evans joining us! Matt is a Brooklyn-based artist, composer and percussionist creating cross-disciplinary productions and sculptural sound installations through an eco-fictional lens. Since moving to Brooklyn in 2012, Evans has maintained numerous musical projects: producing solo performances, writing commissioned compositions, working with choreographers, playing in bands, and performing with new music ensembles. As a solo artist, Evans produces drum performances and sound installations that capture the inexpressible absurdity of supermassive phenomenon (e.g. “global warming” or “the internet”) with a focus toward the fearlessness of the human individual in the face of such circumstances. His debut solo record “New Topographics” explores our cultural epoch’s existence between digital, physical and natural realms via hypnotic compositions for percussion and electronics that “thrust the listener into hyperreal and phantasmal realms” (Wire Magazine). Evans has released recordings with Whatever's Clever Records, New Amsterdam Records, NNA Tapes, Thrill Jockey, Cantaloupe Music and Perfect Wave. Collaboration and community continue to be cornerstones of Evans’ broader artistic practice, having performed, recorded and co-lead projects with Tigue, Bearthoven, Ensemble Signal, Contemporaneous, Thee Obsidian Gong, Open House, Rokenri, and Private Elevators.

Performer Announcement - Dashon Burton!

October 29, 2020

Nevermind The Noise is honored to have Dashon Burton working with our composers as part of the Remote Collaboration Series! Dashon has established a world-wide career in opera, recital, and in many works with orchestra. Dashon is a frequent guest with ensembles such as Philharmonia Baroque, the Handel and Haydn Society, and Boston Baroque; the Carmel and Bethlehem Bach Choir Festivals, and the symphony orchestras of Baltimore, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Indianapolis, Kansas City, New Jersey, Oregon, the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, and the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. He is a regular guest with the Cleveland Orchestra and Franz Welser-Möst, appearing there in Brahms’ and Mozart’s Requiems, the groundbreaking animated production of Janacek’s 'Cunning Little Vixen' and, most recently, at home and on tour in Europe and Japan in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9. Forays into more varied repertoire have included his performances of Michael Tippett’s 'A Child of our Time at Harvard,' Barber’s 'Dover Beach' and Hans Eisler’s 'Ernste Gesänge' with A Far Cry chamber orchestra in Boston, Copland’s Old American Songs with the Kansas City Symphony, Schubert’s 'Die Winterreise' with Diderot String Quartet, as well as performances and the original cast recording of Craig Hella Johnson’s 'Considering Matthew Shepard' with the vocal ensemble Conspirare. Last season, he premiered Paul Moravec’s new oratorio, 'Sanctuary Road,' at Carnegie Hall and performed David Lang’s 'The Little Match Girl Passion' at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Burton continues as a Resident Artist this season with San Francisco Performances, and sings recitals throughout the US, including a program based on works from his album Songs and Struggles of Redemption; We Shall Overcome, singled out by The New York Times as “profoundly moving…a beautiful and lovable disc.” Dashon is an original member of the groundbreaking vocal ensemble, Roomful of Teeth, with whom he won a Grammy for their recording of Caroline Shaw’s Pulitzer-Prize winning Partita for 8 Voices.
