Liberal Studies Alternative Breaks 2023-2024

WHAT IS LS ALTERNATIVE BREAKS?

The Liberal Studies Alternative Breaks (LSAB) program is designed to bring together students interested in service learning and creating social change. The program provides an opportunity for students to develop leadership skills and strong friendships, and share rewarding experiences while engaging in both domestic and/or international service. Students will engage in service and educational outings throughout the fall and spring semesters, and participate in an Alternative Break during spring break

WHERE & WHY WE SERVE

This year students will be partnering with organizations in Stone Mountain, Georgia to serve migrant and refugee communities. Engaging in service and dialogue within the global community is integral to the mission of Liberal Studies and NYU. One of NYU's founding values is to serve the city that the University first called home. The iconic NYU torch is an ode to the Statue of Liberty and NYU's commitment to serve New York City. Now with over 14 global academic centers, including two degree-granting campuses all outside of New York City, NYU strives to be a University that is not just in and of the city of New York, but a University that is in and of the world, serving local communities across the globe. LS Alternative Breaks is one practical way for NYU students to live out this core value of learning from and serving local communities both near and far from the Square. Previous LSAB programs in particular have traveled to Detroit & Flint, Michigan, and Antigua, Guatemala.

THE NEED

The total estimated costs of the trip this year is $15,500. Our goal is to raise at least $3,000 to meet the most basic accommodation costs.
