5th Year Anniversary Fund for Sulo

     Celebrate Sulo: The Philippine Studies Initiative at NYU’s fifth year anniversary. Sulo aims to create an innovative, interdisciplinary Global Philippine Studies program and a hub for global Philippine scholars and community organizations to foster collaboration, research, and advocacy.

     The goal of this fundraiser is to strengthen and support Philippine studies across NYU through student-centered public programs, teaching, support for research, and connect NYU to the broader community. This fundraiser will be able to cover staffing and programming expenses and increase the amount of research funds available to undergraduate and graduate students at NYU interested in conducting Philippine studies-focused research.

Over the past few years, we have offered programs that promote the study of diverse Filipino narratives, histories, and lived experiences; serve the interests of local Filipino/Filipino American communities; and encourage critical conversations about how Filipinos construct their past, understand their present, and imagine their futures.

Some of the past year's highlights

  • the successful launch of the public syllabus Here Lies Love in Critical Contexts;
  • co-sponsorship of Atlantic Pacific Theatre's stage reading of Chris Millado's Buwan at Baril sa Eb Major
  • a book talk with journalist Patricia Evangelista, author of Some People Need Killing;
  • screenings of Jun Lana's films Big Night! and About Us (as part of the Panawin film series curated by Gil Quito); and
  • a panel on Filipino and Filipinx American health.

Many of these events were organized in close collaboration with local community leaders and organizations.
